   When dropped, the bottom of a slinky will hover motionless until the top reaches it.

   Because of the stored tension, the top portion is traveling faster than the force of gravity. Conversely, that same tension is pulling the bottom half upwards, causing the ‘hover.’ Once the top reaches the bottom, it transfers its momentum and the entire slinky is now traveling faster than the speed of Earth’s gravitational pull. Unlike most shit on Reddit, this is legitimate. It’s science, not magic.
